My Approach
Why is human-centered design important?
01
It Focuses on Learning
We can think about change from a purely process-driven place, but it wouldn't account for what individuals need to learn in order to adopt a new initiative or operate a new technology.
02
It's Behavior-Based
People-centered design focuses on the behaviors and interactions that are required for change to be sustainable long-term.
03
It's Culture-Informed
We may implement a new technology to address a business challenge, but we may not always consider how the implementation of a new technology might be influenced by underlying cultural dynamics. We can integrate our understanding of the cultural conditions in which people operate to design systems that can be more readily adopted.
04
It Nurtures Ownership
When people are regularly consulted throughout the design or change process, we can engender a sense of personal ownership which is critical to people fully adopting a new technology or change initaitive. Human-centered design change centers people's needs which paves the way for more change champions.
Why should we strive to be authentic and vulnerable leaders?
Nurter Psychological Safety
By being authentic and vulnerable, we can dissolve divide between our core selves and how we show up in the world.
Authenticity is an essential in ensuring IDEAs thrive beyond the performative realm.
By modeling authentic leadership, we encourage others to stand confidently in showing up in all their imperfections.
Why use Appreciative Inquiry?
01
It incentivizes motivation
When we center positive and enabling experiences as the locus of change, we can better motivate ourselves to build on the good we're already doing.
02
It helps us see what's driving us
It helps us expand our imaginations beyond the traditional defecit framing.
03
It minimizes shame
Building on our strengths helps us reconnect with what's possible. If we're always focusing on our mistakes, it can paralyze us into inaction.
Why be radically transparent?
Building Compassionate Accountability
Lasting relationships grow out of mutual respect and accountability, which are key to radical transparency. For the integrity of our connections, we must be willing to hold up the mirror to ourselves and each other.
The work of change, whether cultural, systemic, or individual, is strengthened by transparency and a willingness to work constructively through differences and difficulties.
Transparency with and turning toward each other when differences or conflicts arise remind us of the important role interdependence and community-building have in making long-lasting systemic and cultural change.
My Harm Reduction Approach
01
I notice where harm lives.
The first step to harm reduction is noticing the signs that point to a lack of safety in an environment.
02
I target inequity.
I hone in on policies, procedures or practices that reflect power imbalances in order to reduce barriers to equity.
03
I empower and educate.
I provide safe spaces to discuss harm in the organization and empower people with the tools to apply harm reduction in their organizations.
